On January 16, 2008, Chandrawathi from Buttala boarded a bus to her workplace, only for it to be bombed and attacked with gunfire. She was unconscious for five days and underwent four months of treatment in multiple hospitals.
The attack left her with one leg amputated, blindness in one eye, and bomb fragments in her body, causing ongoing pain. She received Rs. 25,000 as compensation and educational aid for her children, but her life remains forever altered.
